Poem

What is more boring
Than having a plan,
A predictable life
That is spiceless and bland?
Isn't it better
To wing it instead?
Living our lives
With all heart, and no head?
Why should I look past
The end of my nose?
Got a roof o'er my head,
Got some food, and some clothes . . . .
Eat, drink, and be merry!
Tomorrow we die!
Be "Totally Present"
And never ask "Why?"
Just live for today,
And hope for the best.
Don't even plan dinner.
Put God to the test . . . .
Say the car's broken down
With no money to fix it.
Just stick out your thumb,
Let others deal with it.
"I am special, immune
To most physical laws.
Entropy? Doesn't apply
To my cause.
Let other folks worry
'Bout that sort of thing.
I just do not care
What the future will bring.
We 'Spiritual People'
Don't care about 'stuff.'
Whatever life brings
I'll consider 'enough.'
Consider the lillies,
The birds, and the pidgeons . . . .
We even learn planning
Is bad in religions . . . ."
***
. . . or is it? Perhaps we are
Getting it wrong,
Embedding mistakes
In our thought and our song . . . .
So don't be absurd,
And stop taking for granted
All the ways you've been blessed
By seeds others have planted
Because they made plans,
And they cared to foresee
Things they'd never enjoy,
Made for you and for me,
Because they loved us
And they cared about more
Than the here and the now.
They looked up from the floor
And looked to the future,
And dared to be great,
And charted their destiny,
Said "no" to fate.
Lest you doubt me, and argue,
Remember, my friend:
Your shelter was drawn
With an architect's pen.

Maybe the point is,
We're not s'posed to WORRY,
Running about
In a rushed, frantic hurry,
But we should mind our flocks,
Pursue peace, avoid strife,
Cherishing, loving
This gift that's called life,
Managing carefully,
Looking ahead,
Providing for grandkids
Who'll live in our stead,
But who aren't yet born.
They'll come along soon!
You'd better get busy,
Start singing my tune.
There are other things, too:
I count more than twenty!
Ignoring them can bring on
Suffering a-plenty.
Don't ignore them and suffer.
Let's prepare instead,
Living our lives with both
Full heart and head.
The truth is, plans help make
Life savory and sweet!
So get yours today!
