Fascinated by the state of the art in Project Management best tools and practices and, more generally, by the art of Getting Things Done (GTD), from time to time over the years I would randomly interview experienced project managers about their favorite tools and techniques. For the longest time, their usual answer was that they'd prefer an experienced project manager who knew how to use an ordinary word processor and spreadsheet to elaborate project management software.
Then the good folks at Smartsheet came along and revolutionized Project Management. Before, Project Management software was "databasey", expensive and complicated. Only larger enterprises could justify the cost, complexity, and steep learning curves.
Smartsheet made sophisticated project management possible for everyone by making it "spreadsheety" and affordable. By making it "spreadsheety" they radically flattened the learning curve, and by putting their product on the cloud they lowered unit costs and facilitated teamwork.
Since Smartsheet, others have come along offering variety and ease to the Project Management space. Above, in the right margin, is a collection of my favorites, all of which I can help you learn and use.
As comparatively simple as it may be, because of its versatility and general usefulness, understanding how it could be used in a particular situation may still be challenging. Learning it, choosing a general solution, editing or designing it for a particular situation, then deploying the solution and getting into the habit of using it requires more time, attention, and effort than many busy people feel they can afford.
